Students went on a virtual field trip to UMMA this week! We viewed a variety of artwork of cats and dogs as the theme! We were able to see these works of art and variety of ways they were created! We saw paintings, sculptures, pastel drawings, and photographs. We then created our own drawing of a dog or cat inspired by the trip. We created our drawings in our own style and chosen materials. Check out their work below!
Self Portraits of Change
This week we talked about MLK JR and the impact he had on our country. We discussed how colors can symbolize a bigger idea, concept or feeling. We created self portraits using simple steps and used a color to represent a word that we want to be known for such as love, hope, peace, fun etc. Check out their color portraits below!

Gee's Bend Quilts
This week we looked at quilts made by the women from Gee's Bend, Alabama. We explored the variety of colors and patterns used in these quilts and how the skill and style of quilt making had been passed down from generation to generation in this community. We then created our quilts "my way" by starting with a shape or color and continued to build up our design with other shapes, colors, and patterns in a similar improve style as these quilters!
The Heidelberg Project
Students looked at Tyree Guyton's "The Heidelberg Project" as inspiration for our new project. We talked about why Tyree used found art and paint to bring attention to the abandoned homes in Detroit and the controversial opinions about his art. We then created our own home drawings with unique patterns and objects to make them stand out like Tyree's work.

Contrast Critters
This week we explored the principle of art contrast! We learned how to create contrast in art by using opposite elements in art such us dark vs light colors, rough vs smooth textures, or small vs large shapes. We then created a made up critter out of paper. We chose one light colored paper and one dark to create contrast in our collage!
Charles McGee Unity
This week we looked at Detroit artist Charles McGee's work and discussed how artists can use the elements of art to create unity. For our drawing we use line, shape, and color to create unity in the same style as Charles McGee.
Earth Day Collages
Students created a collage inspired by Earth Day!
Heather Galler
This week we looked at the beautiful work of Heather Galler! Galler is a folk artist who is well known for her bright patterns and colors. We discussed folk art and created our own artwork in the style of Galler's work and chose a subject that has meaning to our lives!
