Warm/Cool Contrast Drawings
This week we talked about warm and cool colors and how they can be used to create contrast. The students were then challenged to create a drawing with two very contrasting images.
Shape/Space Collage
5th graders learned about positive and negative space this week! We created a template using the outline of the object we choose and traced that template on our paper. After we traced our image on our paper until it filled the entire paper we then colored in the negative spaces and left the positive shapes white. Check out their work!

Graffiti Words
5th graders created words in the style of graffiti. We looked at artist Jean Michel Basquiat for inspiration to create our words!

5th graders created snow globes inspired by Jen Aranyi's watercolor landscape drawings. The students chose what landscape they wanted to create in their globe and then painted the sky using an analogous color scheme!
Claymation Characters
5th graders learned about claymation this week and created their own character out of clay! There was an optional activity to try and make a mini claymation movie with their character using the Chrome extension "Stop Motion Animator".
Virtual Field Trip to UMMA!
Students went on a virtual field trip to UMMA this week! We viewed a variety of artwork zooming in and out to see the artwork in different points of view! We then created a drawing in response to what we saw! We created a suit inspired by Walter Oltmann’s sculptures. He creates life size suits out of gold and aluminum wire that are inspired by insects and their defense mechanisms in nature. Check out their work below!
Self Portraits of Change
This week we talked about MLK JR and the impact he had on our country. We discussed how words have power and created a self portrait out of words. We chose words that had a special meaning to us. We chose words that are important to us, words that represents our dreams, and words that represent change we want to see in our world!

Wayne Thiebaud Cake Painting
Gee's Bend Quilts
This week we looked at quilts made by the women from Gee's Bend, Alabama. We explored the variety of colors and patterns used in these quilts and how the skill and style of quilt making had been passed down from generation to generation in this community. We then created our quilts "my way" by starting with a shape or color and continued to build up our design with other shapes, colors, and patterns in a similar improve style as these quilters!
Charles Demuth Abstract Portraits
5th graders learned about the art movement Precisionism and looked at Charles Demuth's painting "I saw the Figure 5 in Gold". This painting was an abstract portrait of Demuth's friend William Carlos Williams. We then created our own abstract portraits using numbers, letters, and symbols to represent our person we chose. We created our work in the style of Precisionism with harsh lines and geometric shapes.
